SOA
on-line
There are now a number of online shipwreck databases that could provide models for putting an adapted version of the SOA database online as a link to the SOA web page. Other features that will eventually be linked to the web page and database include:
A bibliography of works cited in the database, and relevant to the work of INA Turkey, and links to useful contacts.
Short essays and introductions on topics such as the history of underwater archaeology in Turkey, seafaring in Anatolia during various periods, and useful maps.
A glossary of archaeological and ship terms, diagrams of artefact typologies etc.
We believe that the shipwrecks of Anatolia are an important part of the world’s cultural heritage, and enjoyment of these fragile treasures should not be the preserve of academics alone. Unfortunately, shipwrecks have long been a target for unscrupulous looters, and we cannot publish precise site co-ordinates for that reason. However, we believe that public understanding, appreciation, and ultimately tourism will provide the best incentive to protect Anatolia’s underwater treasures. Accordingly, we have assigned scenic and technical dive ‘ratings’ for each ship in our database, in the hope that recreational divers will one day be able to visit some of these remarkable sites as part of supervised tours.
